Welcome to The McMillan Letter

Times, they are a changin’. There is a lot of truth to that statement in relation to the markets. After the stock market collapsed from 2000 through 2002, investors realize that they can not rely on the market to move ever upward. In the go-go 90s, tech was the place to be. For the last two or three years, energy, gold, and commodities have delivered outsized returns. The heady days of mergers and acquisitions are upon us after disappearing for several years. Dividends are back in a big way, and stock buy-backs are prevalent. Real estate property values have increased dramatically. To realize profits, you have to align to underlying trends in the market and find investments with the most potential to exploit those trends. You have to know when to use leverage, when to bet on the market, when to bet against it, and when to stand aside. You have to understand the market’s dynamics!

How Do We Do It?

First, we identify underlying trends in the markets. While some sectors may be experiencing bull markets, others may be exhibiting symptoms of bear markets. The key is to determine which sectors or specific industries present the best trading opportunities by understanding where we are in economic and trading cycles. Once the roadmap of sector/industry rotation is understood, a vehicle to take advantage of this is chosen. That might be a long or short position for a specific stock or an ETF. We may employ hedging strategies to protect profits. We may even use leverage, such as options or futures if we identify trading opportunities where these deliver the highest risk to reward.

The key is identifying the underlying market dynamics and then choosing a strategy that is appropriate to use based on those conditions. Healthy rises will see different investment mixes than when we are expecting weakness or flat markets. Percentage of assets invested will vary based on market conditions and also based on identified opportunities.

How Easy Is It?

Every week, we will publish a report on underlying fundamentals we are seeing in the markets and describe observed sector/industry rotations. We will look at investments in leading companies in these industries/sectors. We will make trade recommendations when we have identified opportunities that are aligned with the markets. These may come out in the weekly reports or as alerts on any trading day.

Slowly, we will develop a portfolio that is aligned to fundamental currents in the markets. We will maintain positions as long as that alignment is maintained. We will regularly provide educational materials that will not only explain how we arrived at certain choices, but also provide you with tools and knowledge that you will be able to employ to leverage, hedge, or align other positions you may have in your portfolio.

When we make a trade recommendation, you will receive specific instructions on how to enter the trade and exit criteria to put into place to protect your position.
